Program Outline:

Big Bang Education’s Properties of Matter program has been designed to help teachers achieve the Australian Curriculum science understanding in Chemical Sciences for Year 5:

Solids, liquids and gases have different observable properties and behave in different ways (ACSSU077)

Year 5 students will participate in a hands-on workshop investigating the properties of matter. Students will learn about the three different states of matter – solids, liquids and gases – and investigate the properties of these states of matter.

Requirements:
  • A large indoor space – your school hall is ideal!
  • Ten trestle tables or equivalent for workshop materials
  • Nearby access to water
Program Includes:
  • 75-90-minute workshop for each individual class (maximum of 30 students per session)

  • The Properties of Matter program covers the following areas of the Australian Curriculum (version 8.1).

  • Solids, liquids and gases have different observable properties and behave in different ways (ACSSU077)
  • Science involves testing predictions by gathering data and using evidence to develop explanations of events and phenomena and reflects historical and cultural contributions (ACSHE081)
  • With guidance, pose clarifying questions and make predictions about scientific investigations (ACSIS231)
  • Identify, plan and apply the elements of scientific investigations to answer questions and solve problems using equipment and materials safely and identifying potential risks (ACSIS086)
  • Compare data with predictions and use as evidence in developing explanations (ACSIS218)
