Natural & Processed Materials

Duration: 30-min show + 45-60-min workshop
Cost: From $12.00 per student (ex. GST)
Program Outline:

Big Bang Education’s Natural & Processed Materials program has been designed to help Year 4 teachers achieve the Australian Curriculum science understanding in Chemical Sciences:

Natural and processed materials have a range of physical properties that can influence their use (ACSSU074)

Year 4 students will first experience an exciting science show which introduces them to different properties of materials, such as elasticity, absorbency, and rigidity, and how these properties affect the use of the material.

During the hands-on workshop that follows, students will conduct a series of engineering challenges using a variety of different materials to create structures that serve different purposes.

  • A large indoor space – your school hall is ideal! We would need enough space to have both the science show and workshop set up at the same time to allow for maximum use of time.
  • One large trestle table or equivalent
  • Nearby access to water
Program Includes:
  • 30-minute show for Year 4 cohort
  • 45-60-minute workshop for each individual class (maximum of 30 students per session)
Curriculum Links:
  • Natural and processed materials have a range of physical properties that can influence their use (ACSSU074)
  • Science knowledge helps people to understand the effect of their actions (ACSHE062)
  • With guidance, identify questions in familiar contexts that can be investigated scientifically and make predictions based on prior knowledge (ACSIS064)
  • With guidance, plan and conduct scientific investigations to find answers to questions, considering the safe use of appropriate materials and equipment (ACSIS065)
  • Compare results with predictions, suggesting possible reasons for findings (ACSIS216)
  • Investigate the suitability of materials, systems, components, tools and equipment for a range of purposes (ACTDEK013)
