Push and Pull

year 2 tug of waryear 2

Big Bang Education’s Year 2 Physical Sciences program has been designed to help teachers achieve the Australian Curriculum science understanding in Physical Sciences:

  • A push or a pull affects how an object moves or changes shape (ACSSU033).

It is an exciting introduction to pushing and pulling forces.

Year 2 students will first experience an entertaining science show which introduces them to the basics of push and pull forces, including exploring how push and pull forces can affect the shape of objects and observing how different strength forces cause objects to move in different ways.

During the hands-on workshop that follows, students will investigate what makes an object float or sink and the different forces acting upon objects in water; explore how push and pull forces can make different objects move; and conduct a class investigation into the push and pull forces acting upon objects in air.

Shows and workshops are delivered by a professional science educator with over 10 years of experience.

Program Outline

The program includes:

  • 30 minute show for entire year level (maximum of 100 children)
  • 45 minute hands-on workshop for each individual class (maximum of 30 children)
  • Follow-up worksheets emailed to the booking teacher

Depending on your daily timetable, we can cater for 2-4 classes per day.

Requirements

  • A large indoor space – your school hall is ideal! We would need enough space to have both the science show and workshop set up at the same time to allow for maximum use of time.
  • 6 large tables – two for the presenter to use during the show, and four for workshop materials
  • Access to water – an outdoor area close to the show/workshop space would be ideal to conduct the activities including water

No access to power is required for this program.

Curriculum Links

The Year 2 Physical Sciences program covers the following areas of the Australian Curriculum (version 8.1).

  • A push or a pull affects how an object moves or changes shape (ACSSU033)
  • Science involves observing, asking questions about, and describing changes in, objects and events (ACSHE034)
  • Pose and respond to questions, and make predictions about familiar objects and events (ACSIS037)
  • Participate in guided investigations to explore and answer questions (ACSIS038)
  • Use informal measurements to collect and record observations, using digital technologies as appropriate (ACSIS039)
  • Use a range of methods to sort information, including drawings and provided tables and through discussion, compare observations with predictions (ACSIS040)
  • Compare observations with those of others (ACSIS041)
